The PPF works on cross-sport policy and welfare issues to complement and add value to the work of our member Player Associations. Working with our partners, we have produced various resources including educational films, online resources and influential research.
This is a key priority for the PPF. In 2015, we worked with MIND and the Sport and Recreational Alliance to establish the Charter for Mental Health for Sport.
We support the important work Player Associations on mental health and well-being for current and retired sportspeople. We use events such as Mental Health Awareness Week and Time To Talk Day to raise awareness and help break down the stigma around mental health. We have produced a series of short films featuring former players discussing mental health and sport.
Research commissioned by the PPF showed that professional sportspeople are at a significantly increased risk of becoming problem gamblers. Working with GambleAware we created a dedicated microsite featuring video testimonies, tips and advice for players about problem gambling as well as providing links to support and treatment information for players.
With our betting partners, we work hard to highlight key messages around betting integrity and match fixing. As well as funding Player Association education projects we have produced a series of films to highlight some of the risks players face and give advice on what they should do if they receive a corrupt approach.
The PPF Education & Training Committee brings together Player Development Managers and performance lifestyle advisers to provide useful group resources such as training provider databases and recommended courses for professional sportspeople to carry out either alongside their sport or once retired from sport.
Player associations play a vital role in ensuring the transition from playing into a second career is as smooth and successful as possible. As part of our Transition Week, we produced a series of case studies and videos showcasing the diversity of careers sportspeople go on to enjoy.
From time to time, we commission research projects on behalf of our members to help produce cross-sport information around key topics such as problem gambling, mental health and career transition.
We will also occasionally produce general protocols on areas such as Concussion which draw together current best practice to produce guidelines for sports.
