The Rugby Players Association (RPA) is delighted to announce the official launch of its working relationship with The Open University (OU). This collaboration is designed to provide elite players with unparalleled access to flexible distance learning opportunities and support, ensuring that education remains accessible and properly supported, regardless of personal circumstances.
Elite rugby players often face unique challenges in balancing the demands of their careers with their aspirations for personal growth and education. Recognising this, the RPA and OU have joined forces to create a tailored approach to learning that supports players every step of the way. This relationship offers personalised support, assistance with transferring higher education course credits from the UK or abroad, and enhanced course offerings tailored to players’ needs.
Additionally, through the OU’s OpenLearn platform, players can explore a range of free and accessible courses. This platform offers tasters and introductory materials, allowing players to discover their interests before committing to a specific path.
Speaking about the agreement, Richard Easton, RPA Player Development Manager, said: “Having this new relationship with the Open University allows us to better help players engage with and stay in education. The OU’s flexible learning model suits the demands of elite rugby careers, and their understanding of players’ unique lives is further enhancing the support they offer. Ultimately, our goal is to ensure players have as many career options as possible when life beyond the pitch begins. I’m excited about the potential to grow this partnership even further.”
Ian Pickup, Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor at The Open University, said: “Professional athletes in all sporting codes have many demands on their time, but having opportunities to learn and develop skills for life after sport is so important. I am really proud of the OU’s track record of providing flexible, distance learning and am excited that we are working in partnership with the RPA support more rugby players to study and prepare for their futures.”
