RPA - 21st February 2025 - RPA launch Apprenticeship Programme

February 2025

The RPA is excited to announce the launch of a pioneering apprenticeship programme designed to support both players and non-playing staff.

Set to commence this spring, the initiative will provide valuable career development opportunities while strengthening the professional infrastructure within the sport.

Delivered in partnership with Premiership Rugby, Premiership clubs, Education Wise, Learning Curve Group, and BPP, the programme will enable clubs to access apprenticeship funding, enhancing career pathways for players transitioning beyond the game and supporting the progression of non-playing staff within their current roles. By equipping individuals with the skills and qualifications needed for long-term success, the programme reinforces rugby’s commitment to developing talent both on and off the field.

Key Benefits of the Apprenticeship Programme

For Participants:

  • Practical Experience: Apprentices will gain hands-on experience in their chosen field, working alongside industry professionals.
  • Comprehensive Training: Structured learning and professional development will equip participants with essential skills for future careers.
  • Mentorship & Support: Dedicated mentors will provide guidance throughout the apprenticeship, ensuring a supportive learning environment.
  • Earn While You Learn: Participants will have the opportunity to earn a salary while obtaining qualifications, allowing players to balance rugby commitments with professional growth and enabling staff to advance in their roles.

For Clubs:

    • Tailored Programmes: Apprenticeship providers understand the demands of elite sport and offer flexible, club-specific solutions.
    • Talent Retention: Investing in staff and player development fosters loyalty and helps retain skilled professionals within the rugby community.
    • Consistency Across Clubs: A unified apprenticeship framework ensures continuity for players moving between Premiership teams.
    • Commitment to Social Responsibility: The initiative demonstrates the collective commitment of the RPA, Premiership Rugby, and Premiership clubs to supporting career development within and beyond the sport

Christian Day, General Secretary of the Rugby Players Association, commented:

"We are proud to introduce this apprenticeship programme, reinforcing our dedication to helping players prepare for life after rugby while also supporting the career development of club staff. We look forward to working closely with Premiership Rugby, the clubs, and our education partners to deliver meaningful opportunities for our members."
