PFA Scotland - 27th January 2026 - Former player Devlin joins PFA Scotland as Project Lead

January 2026

PFA Scotland are pleased to confirm Michael Devlin has taken up a new full-time position with the union, marking the next chapter in his career following his retirement from playing in December.

Michael joins the organisation as Project Lead, a role that will see him drive forward new areas of support for members across Scotland. His work will focus on research, engagement with players, and identifying areas within the game where further progress and protection are needed.

Speaking after starting his new role, Michael said:
“I’m delighted to have started a new full-time position with PFA Scotland. I am going to be driving projects forward to support our members.”

A familiar figure within Scottish football, Michael brings first-hand experience of the professional game into the role. He enjoyed a career that saw him play at the top level in Scotland, playing with the national team and Aberdeen, as well as captaining Hamilton Academical and Livingston.

That playing background, as well as his continuous role as PFA Scotland Chair, is central to his approach in his new role as Project Lead.

Throughout his career, Michael was proactive in engaging with different areas of the union and learning about the structures and challenges that exist behind the scenes of professional football. He believes that insight will be invaluable as he now works to support players away from the pitch.

“I have done a lot of learning throughout my career, and I have been able to be proactive in my work with the union, tapping into that experience and target the areas of our game that do need to improve,” he said.

Michael officially retired from professional football in December, allowing him to move straight into a role where his understanding of the game, combined with his credibility among players, can make a real impact. As Project Lead, he will engage directly with members, gather evidence through research and help shape initiatives that respond to the issues players face throughout their careers.

He has already identified key areas that require ongoing attention and development within the game.

“There are areas that we know we need to develop. Whether that be medical issues for players or the ongoing issue of mobbing at clubs,” Michael explained.

Michael’s appointment adds another layer to the ongoing support PFA Scotland provides for members across the country. With a strong focus on listening to players and understanding what really matters to them, the union remains committed to finding new and practical ways to support players both on and off the pitch.

As Project Lead, Michael will be an approachable and familiar face for members, using his own experience of the game to help shape future projects and initiatives. If you would like to learn more, contribute ideas, share insight, and engage with future projects as they develop, please get int touch with Michael as we aim to shape areas of work that support the game across Scotland.
