FAQ - Professional Players Federation

1. How do I become a professional sportsmen?

There many ways to become a professional sportsman or woman and it will vary between different sports.  A good first point of contact will often be the national governing body of the sport or your local sports club. It is important for all aspiring players to remember that very few people actually progress to become professionals.  Even amongst those sportsmen that are signed by professional clubs when they leave school, the vast majority will have left the sport by the time they are twenty one.

2. Why do professional sportsmen need player associations?

A job in sport can be rewarding, yet it is also a risky business.  A career ending injury can happen at any time and the average length of a career in most sports is less than ten years. Almost all sportsmen have to start new careers once their playing days are over.  The player associations have an important role in helping sportsmen to make this transition by providing training and education programmes.

3. Why don’t professional players contribute more to their local community?

Almost all sports now run community programmes where professional players get involved in helping community sport in their neighbourhood.  The majority of players are actively involved in helping youngsters through these initiatives though all too often these good news stories go unreported.   The PPF runs an annual award to recognise and reward those professional players that make an outstanding contribution to their local communities.
